The U.S. Contribution in the Continuity of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict!
By Iman El-Mahdi
The Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been going on for hundreds of years; it even traces back to the conflict between the Zionists and the Arabs living in Palestine under the British and Ottoman control. Although there have been multiple attempts by various countries to end the Middle East’s main conflict, this issue doesn’t seem to be any closer to a peaceful end. I must admit that my article will be biased as I am an Egyptian, Arab, and a Muslim, thus my argument will be extremely supportive of the Palestinians as I grew up learning about the Palestinians’ suffering and how cruel the Israelis are. Recently, Mahmoud Abbas submitted a request to the United Nations to finally become an official UN member. However, the United States threatened to veto the resolution. In my opinion, the U.S. plays the main role in the continuity of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as they pretend to be neutral when it is obvious that they are leaning toward the Israeli side. It is normal to take sides and that’s not my issue with the United States. My main problem with the U.S. is that it pretends to be neutral, when we all know that it is biased toward the Israelis.
When the Palestinians finally headed down the path of acceptance in the UN gaining appreciation from other countries, the U.S. insisted in ruining it for them. The majority of the representatives of the UN members clapped after Abbas’ speech in the UN, which proved that they are in agreement with the Palestinians gaining their rights, however the United States killed their dream.
Even when UNESCO accepted a Palestinian bid for full membership, with 107 votes in favor, 14 against, and 52 abstentions, the U.S. decided to cut the UNESCO funding, which is about $80 million a year. The United States tried to intimidate many countries to prevent them from voting for the Palestinian membership. However, as a Palestinian authority figure said, “The vote shows that most countries refuse to be intimidated and blackmailed.” The American government proved to the world that it doesn’t care about the peace deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians, yet it is only concerned about its deep involvement with Israel. Thus, it will continuously remain in support of the Israeli side and will do its best to keep on killing the Palestinians’ dreams.
For many years, American policies have been supportive of Israel and its inhumane actions toward the Palestinians. However, the most mysterious part about its current government is Barack Obama himself. Obama tried his best to make the world believe his lies that he only wants peace in the Middle East and that he remains neutral. Nevertheless as time passes, he continues to prove to the world that he is simply a good speaker who easily tells lies in order to get the world’s appreciation and support. The only respectable part about the former U.S. president, Bush, is that he clearly said that he supports Israel, but, Obama lied to the world about his perspective.
The United States needs to either admit to the media that it is Israel’s main ally or actually become neutral between the Israelis and the Palestinians, as it claims to be. The only way to become a neutral power in this conflict is to finally allow Palestine to have a permanent membership in the UN.

Student Interview: Hayam El-Sanousi, KASSC Secretary

by Bethel Tafere
Many of us KASers know Hayam El-Sanousi, the high school senior who has just recently been elected secretary of the student council. I had the chance to interview her a few days ago, and learned as much as I could about our future secretary.
Hayam first transferred to KAS when she was in seventh grade, so this is her sixth academic year here. Her older brother, Mazin El-Sanousi, graduated from KAS a few years ago, and she also has a younger brother, Kareem, who is in fourth grade at KAS.
When asked what she likes most and least about our school, Hayam said that her favorite thing about KAS was the great interaction between teachers and students. What she likes least about KAS, however, is that the students are often not given as much of a voice in activities as they would like. She hopes that she and the student body president, Iman El-Mahdi, will be able to change this.
Before the election for student council representatives a few weeks ago, Hayam, Iman, and Sarah Saif Omer (a KAS junior), who were each running for a different office, decided to join their campaigns and create slogans and posters, which were posted all over the school. This was their campaign strategy. They also spoke to the middle-schoolers to find out what the younger students wanted, and promoting their campaign. “We got mostly positive reactions from everyone, but you never know if they’ll vote for you,” said Hayam.
Preparing for the election, however, Hayam says, was not difficult. She put a lot of thought into her speech, had it proofread, and practiced it in front of a few of her friends, but it was not stressful and she did the best she could. Her advice when running a campaign is to be positive, interact with the people and most of all, never promise anything that you can’t keep.
Now that she has been elected, Hayam will be working alongside Iman El-Mahdi, student-body president, Saba Khan, vice president, and Moi Elbashir, treasurer. The student representatives for each grade will be elected next week, and student council will begin planning activities for the year.
Congratulations to Hayam on her win, and we wish her luck on her senior year as secretary of the KAS student council.
